Barret Oliver est né le 24 août 1973 à Los Angeles. Après avoir tourné dans quelques publicités pour la télévision, le petit garçon obtient son premier rôle à 8 ans, en 1981, dans la série Hulk. Trois ans plus tard, sa carrière décolle avec L’histoire sans fin, et il devient rapidement la nouvelle coqueluche d’Hollywood…
Il tourne ensuite dans Cocoon, un film de science-fiction récompensé par deux Oscars, puis D.A.R.Y.L, en 1986, pour lequel il obtient un Saturn Award du meilleur jeune acteur (à 11 ans).
