Like a Prayer est le quatrième album studio de la chanteuse et compositrice américaine Madonna, sorti le 21 mars 1989 chez Sire Records. Madonna a travaillé avec Stephen Bray, Patrick Leonard et Prince sur l’album tout en co-écrivant et coproduisant toutes les chansons. Son album le plus introspectif à l’époque, Like a Prayer, a été décrit comme un disque confessionnel. Madonna a décrit l’album comme une collection de chansons «sur ma mère, mon père et mes liens avec ma famille».

L’album était dédié à la mère de Madonna, décédée lorsqu’elle était jeune. L’album utilise des instruments en direct et incorpore des éléments de danse, de funk, de gospel et de soul dans un style pop plus général. Madonna a puisé dans son éducation catholique, comme on le voit sur la chanson titre de l’album, qui a également été publié comme premier single. Les paroles traitent de thèmes de l’enfance et de l’adolescence de Madonna, comme la mort de sa mère dans « Promise to Try », l’importance de la famille dans « Keep It Together » et sa relation avec son père dans « Oh Father ». Madonna prêche également l’autonomisation des femmes dans «Express Yourself».
