Van Gogh « The Potato Eaters »
Au XIXe siècle, le réalisme était un mouvement artistique populaire aux Pays-Bas. Les artistes peignaient « de manière tonale », en utilisant de nombreuses variations claires et sombres d’une seule couleur. Lorsqu’il a débuté comme peintre, Van Gogh souhaitait réaliser les mêmes peintures sombres et réalistes que ses collègues néerlandais.

Van Gogh considérait les Mangeurs de pommes de terre comme une pièce maîtresse, pour laquelle il choisit délibérément une composition difficile pour prouver qu’il était en passe de devenir un bon peintre de figures. Le tableau devait représenter la dure réalité de la vie à la campagne, c’est pourquoi il donnait aux paysans des visages grossiers et des mains osseuses et travailleuses. Il voulait montrer ainsi qu’ils « ont eux-mêmes labouré la terre avec ces mains qu’ils mettent dans le plat… qu’ils ont ainsi honnêtement gagné leur nourriture ».
Il a peint les cinq personnages dans des couleurs terreuses – « quelque chose comme la couleur d’une pomme de terre vraiment poussiéreuse, non pelée bien sûr ». Le message du tableau était plus important pour Van Gogh que l’anatomie correcte ou la perfection technique. Il était très satisfait du résultat : pourtant, sa peinture suscitait de nombreuses critiques en raison de ses couleurs très sombres et de ses figures pleines d’erreurs. Les Mangeurs de pommes de terre sont aujourd’hui l’une des œuvres les plus célèbres de Van Gogh.

În secolul al XIX-lea, realismul a fost o mișcare de artă populară în Țările de Jos. Artiștii au pictat „tonal”, folosind multe variații deschise și întunecate ale unei singure culori. Când a început ca pictor, Van Gogh a vrut să creeze aceleași picturi întunecate și realiste ca și colegii săi olandezi.

Van Gogh i-a văzut pe „Mâncătorii de cartofi” ca pe o piesă de spectacol, pentru care a ales în mod deliberat o compoziție dificilă pentru a dovedi că era pe cale să devină un bun pictor de figuri. Tabloul trebuia să înfățișeze realitatea dură a vieții de la țară, așa că le-a dat țăranilor fețe aspre și mâini osoase, lucrătoare. El a vrut să arate în acest fel că „au lucrat ei înșiși pământul cu aceste mâini pe care le pun în farfurie… că și-au câștigat astfel cinstit mâncarea”.
El a pictat cele cinci figuri în culori pământii – „ceva ca culoarea unui cartof cu adevărat prăfuit, cu pielea pe, desigur”. Mesajul picturii era mai important pentru Van Gogh decât anatomia corectă sau perfecțiunea tehnică. Este foarte mulțumit de rezultat: totuși, pictura lui atrage multe critici din cauza culorilor foarte închise și a figurilor pline de erori. The Potato Eaters este una dintre cele mai faimoase lucrări ale lui Van Gogh astăzi.

In the 19th century, realism was a popular artistic movement in the Netherlands. Artists painted ‘tonally’, using many light and dark variations of a single colour. When he started out as a painter, Van Gogh wanted to make the same dark and realistic paintings as his Dutch colleagues.

Van Gogh saw the Potato Eaters as a showpiece, for which he deliberately chose a difficult composition to prove he was on his way to becoming a good figure painter. The painting had to depict the harsh reality of country life, so he gave the peasants coarse faces and bony, working hands. He wanted to show in this way that they ‘have tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish … that they have thus honestly earned their food’.
He painted the five figures in earth colours – ‘something like the colour of a really dusty potato, unpeeled of course’. The message of the painting was more important to Van Gogh than correct anatomy or technical perfection. He was very pleased with the result: yet his painting drew considerable criticism because its colours were so dark and the figures full of mistakes. Nowadays, the Potato Eaters is one of Van Gogh’s most famous works.
