L’«énigme des enfants disparus», qui taraude la société israélienne depuis plus de soixante ans, commence seulement à livrer ses secrets. Ils sont encore plus effrayants que ce que l’on imaginait. D’abord, les archives confirment que des milliers d’enfants yéménites ont bien été enlevés. Mais elles démontrent aussi que certains disparus ont succombé durant des expériences médicales pour lesquelles ils ont servi de cobaye humain.
Echanges de lettres entre hôpitaux rendus publics
Au cours d’une séance spéciale de la Commission ad hoc de la Knesset, le parlement israélien, organisée le 14 juin dernier ont ainsi été dévoilées des lettres échangées au début des années 1950 par plusieurs directeurs de grands hôpitaux du jeune Etat d’Israël. Ceux-ci se félicitaient confidentiellement de «disposer d’un matériel si abondant à Rosh Hayin», le petit village où étaient alors parqués de nombreux Yéménites.
«J’ai retrouvé le témoignage d’une infirmière racontant comment des médecins avaient tenté de savoir pourquoi le cœur des Yéménites est aussi résistant», raconte le député Amir Ohana, (Likoud). «Je n’imaginais pas que des choses pareilles aient pu se passer dans ce pays, j’en suis retourné.»
D’autres documents datant de 1949 et de 1950 prouvent que les hommes en blanc ont cherché à savoir si les Yéménites avaient «du sang nègre». Ils confirment par ailleurs qu’au moins quatre enfants ayant reçu «un traitement expérimental actif» de nature indéterminée en sont morts. Les parents n’ont pas été prévenus et les corps ont été enterrés à la sauvette dans un lieu que plus personne ne peut situer soixante ans plus tard.
Les Yéménites croyaient réaliser un rêve biblique
Peu après la création de l’Etat hébreu en 1948, des centaines de milliers de Juifs originaires des pays arabes et du bassin méditerranéen se sont installés en «Terre promise». Leur intégration n’a pas été facile car la plupart d’entre eux étaient considérés avec mépris par l’establishment «ashkénaze», ces Juifs d’Europe qui constituaient l’ossature du nouvel Etat juif.
Parqués dans des camps de tentes ou dans des «maabarot», des villages de cabanes rudimentaires, les nouveaux émigrants orientaux ont beaucoup souffert. Mais les plus mal traités étaient sans conteste les 48 000 Yéménites emmenés en Israël entre 1948 et 1949 dans le cadre de l’opération «Tapis volant», un pont aérien secret lancé avec le soutien des Etats-Unis et de la Grande-Bretagne.
Profondément religieux, pétris de traditions ancestrales et souvent analphabètes, les «Teymanim» («Yéménites», en hébreu) croyaient réaliser un rêve biblique et s’installer au «Gan Eden» (le paradis). En réalité, beaucoup y ont découvert l’enfer. Surtout les parents des trois à cinq mille enfants enlevés par des infirmières à des fins de «vaccination» avant d’être déclarés «morts» ou «disparus».
«C’était forcément vrai»
Selon leurs proches qui se battent depuis plus de soixante ans pour obtenir une réponse, la plupart ces bambins auraient été vendus à des familles occidentales désireuses d’adopter. «Les médecins ont prétendu que mon petit frère Yohanan (9 mois) n’avait pas supporté un vaccin pour le déclarer mort mais nous n’avons jamais su où il avait été enterré», raconte Yossi Gamliel, fils de parents yéménites. «Mon père et ma mère étaient des gens simples, à leurs yeux, lorsqu’un médecin en tablier blanc leur affirmait quelque chose, c’était forcément vrai. Ils ont accusé le choc et considéré la disparition de ce fils comme un coup du destin.»
A l’instar de Yossi Gamliel, nombre de descendants de familles traumatisées par l’étrange disparition de leurs proches maintiennent la pression sur les autorités afin d’obtenir la vérité. Et ce n’est pas facile. Certes, depuis les années 1960, trois commissions d’enquête ont été créées pour élucider le mystère mais en réalité, elles ont tout mis en œuvre pour empêcher la vérité d’éclater au grand jour. Il a donc fallu attendre l’été 2016 pour que, poussé par les médias et par les familles dont certains membres avaient entre-temps été élus à la Knesset, le gouvernement de Benyamin Netanyahou autorise la publication de 200 000 documents confidentiels.
«Vider l’abcès quoiqu’il en coûte»
«Nous devons vider l’abcès quoiqu’il en coûte», proclame Ygal Yossef, descendant d’une famille marquée par la disparition d’un proche. Après enquête, ce dernier a d’ailleurs fourni aux députés des copies de certificats de décès en blanc et signés anticipativement. Ce qui signifie d’après lui que l’enlèvement des enfants était programmé et la mort de certains d’entre eux, anticipée.
«Bien sûr, la situation d’Israël au début des années 1950 n’était évidemment pas celle que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. C’était le foutoir», lâche notre interlocuteur. «Mais quand même, cela n’excuse rien! Nos parents étaient des gens faibles ne comprenant pas bien l’hébreu et ne connaissant pas leurs droits. Ils ont été abusés par un establishment médical qui considérait leurs enfants comme des sujets d’expérience. En leur nom et en celui des disparus, je ne réclame pas la vengeance. Seulement la justice.»

Potrivit rudelor lor, care se luptă de mai bine de șaizeci de ani pentru un răspuns, cei mai mulți dintre acești copii mici au fost vânduți familiilor occidentale în căutarea adopției. „Medicii au spus că fratele meu mai mic Yohanan (9 luni) a murit după ce i s-a injectat un vaccin și l-au declarat mort, dar nu am aflat niciodată unde a fost îngropat”, a spus Yossi Gamliel, fiul părinților yemeniți. „Tatăl meu și mama erau oameni simpli, în ochii lor, când un doctor în halat alb le spunea ceva, trebuia să fie adevărat. Aceștia dau vina pe șocul și consideră dispariția acestui fiu ca pe o întorsătură a sorții.

The « riddle of missing children, » which has plagued Israeli society for more than sixty years, is only beginning to reveal its secrets. They are even scarier than you imagined. First, records confirm that thousands of Yemeni children were indeed abducted. But they also show that some of the disappeared died during medical experiments for which they served as human guinea pigs.
Exchanges of letters between hospitals are made public
During a special session of the Ad Hoc Committee of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, organized on June 14, letters exchanged in the early 1950s by several directors of major hospitals in the young State of Israel were thus revealed. They confidentially congratulated themselves on “having such abundant equipment in Rosh Hayin”, the small village where many Yemenis were then parked.
“I found the testimony of a nurse telling how doctors had tried to find out why the hearts of Yemenis were so resistant,” said MK Amir Ohana (Likud). « I never imagined that such things could have happened in this country, I am devastated »
Other documents from 1949 and 1950 prove that the men in white sought to find out if the Yemenis had « negro blood ». They also confirm that at least four children who received “active experimental treatment” of an undetermined nature have died. The parents were not notified and the bodies were buried on the sly in a place that no one can locate sixty years later.
Yemenis believed they were fulfilling a biblical dream
Shortly after the creation of the Jewish state in 1948, hundreds of thousands of Jews from Arab countries and the Mediterranean basin settled in the « Promised Land ». Their integration was not easy because most of them were looked down upon by the “Ashkenazi” establishment, those European Jews who formed the backbone of the new Jewish state.
Parked in tent camps or in “maabarot”, villages of rudimentary huts, the new oriental emigrants suffered a lot. But the worst treated were arguably the 48,000 Yemenis taken to Israel between 1948 and 1949 as part of Operation « Magic Carpet », a secret airlift launched with the support of the United States and Great Britain.
Deeply religious, steeped in ancestral traditions and often illiterate, the “Teymanim” (“Yemenites”, in Hebrew) believed they were fulfilling a biblical dream and settling in “Gan Eden” (paradise). In reality, many have discovered hell there. Especially the parents of the three to five thousand children abducted by nurses for “vaccination” purposes before being declared “dead” or “missing”.
“It had to be true”
According to their relatives, who have been fighting for more than sixty years to obtain an answer, most of these toddlers have been sold to Western families wishing to adopt. “The doctors claimed that my little brother Yohanan (9 months) had not tolerated a vaccine to declare him dead but we never knew where he was buried”, says Yossi Gamliel, son of Yemeni parents. “My father and my mother were simple people, in their eyes, when a doctor in a white apron told them something, it was necessarily true. They accused the shock and considered the disappearance of this son as a blow of fate.
Like Yossi Gamliel, many descendants of families traumatized by the strange disappearance of their loved ones maintain pressure on the authorities in order to obtain the truth. And it’s not easy. Admittedly, since the 1960s, three commissions of inquiry have been created to elucidate the mystery, but in reality, they have done everything possible to prevent the truth from coming to light. It was therefore not until the summer of 2016 that, pushed by the media and by the families, some of whose members had in the meantime been elected to the Knesset, the government of Binyamin Netanyahu authorized the publication of 200,000 confidential documents.
“Empty the abscess no matter what”
“We have to empty the abscess whatever it costs,” proclaims Ygal Yossef, descendant of a family marked by the disappearance of a loved one. After investigation, the latter also provided the deputies with copies of blank death certificates signed in advance. This means, according to him, that the abduction of the children was planned and the death of some of them, anticipated.
“Of course, the situation in Israel in the early 1950s was obviously not what we know today. It was a mess, ”says our interlocutor. « But still, that doesn’t excuse anything! » Our parents were weak people who didn’t understand Hebrew well and didn’t know their rights. They were abused by a medical establishment that viewed their children as test subjects. In their name and in that of the disappeared, I do not claim revenge, I want truth and justice.
