Nightshift est la face A d’un 45 tours comportant en face B la chanson I Keep Running. Le titre et les paroles de la chanson sont dédiés à deux chanteurs majeurs de rhythm and blues : Jackie Wilson et Marvin Gaye morts tous deux l’année précédente. Ce titre est le plus gros succès du groupe après le départ de Lionel Richie.
Il remporte en 1986 le Grammy Award de la « meilleure chanson R&B en duo ou en groupe ».
Les Commodores enregistrent une nouvelle version de la chanson en 2010 dédicacée à Michael Jackson, après sa mort.

Memories of a hot summer night.
Nightshift is the A-side of a 45 rpm single featuring the song I Keep Running on the B-side. The song’s title and lyrics are dedicated to two major rhythm and blues singers: Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, both of whom died the previous year. This title is the biggest success of the group after the departure of Lionel Richie.
In 1986, he won the Grammy Award for « Best R&B Song, Duo or Group ».
The Commodores recorded a new version of the song in 2010 dedicated to Michael Jackson after his death.
