D’après la légende, l’inventeur présumé des échecs indiens serait un brahmane nommé Sissa. Il aurait inventé le chaturanga pour distraire son prince de l’ennui, tout en lui démontrant la faiblesse du roi sans entourage. Souhaitant le remercier, le monarque propose au sage de choisir lui-même sa récompense. Sissa demande juste un peu de blé. Il invite le souverain à placer un grain de blé sur la première case d’un échiquier, puis deux sur la deuxième case, quatre grains sur la troisième, huit sur la quatrième, et ainsi de suite jusqu’à la soixante-quatrième case en doublant à chaque fois le nombre de grains. Cette demande semble bien modeste au souverain fort surpris et amusé par l’exercice. Mais le roi n’a jamais pu récompenser Sissa : tout compte fait, il aurait fallu lui offrir non pas un sac, mais 18 446 744 073 709 551 615 grains… soit la toute les moissons de la Terre pendant environ cinq mille ans !

Potrivit legendei, presupusul inventator al șahului indian este un brahman pe nume Sissa. Dorind să-i facă pe plac, monarhul îi sugerează ca înțeleptul să-și aleagă singur recompensa. Sissa cere doar grâu. El îl invită pe suveran să pună un bob de grâu pe primul pătrat al unei table de șah, apoi două pe cel de-al doilea pătrat, patru boabe pe al treilea, opt pe al patrulea și așa mai departe până la careul 64 prin dublarea numărului. de cereale de fiecare dată. Această cerere i s-a părut foarte modestă suveranului, care a fost foarte surprins și amuzat de exercițiu. Dar regele nu a fost niciodată în stare să o răsplătească pe Sissa: toate lucrurile luate în considerare, ar fi trebuit să i se ofere nu o pungă, ci 18.446.744.073.709.551.615 de boabe… sau întreaga recoltă a Pământului timp de aproximativ cinci mii de ani!
