E.T.’s voice doesn’t come from AI
The voice of E.T. in the movie « E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial »
did not come from a computer… but from a 60-year-old grandmother who smoked!
Pat Welsh, a strong-willed Californian, smoked two packs a day. Her raspy voice fascinated the film crew, who recorded it and mixed it with the sounds of raccoons, horses, and other unlikely sounds to bring the little alien to life.
And that’s not all…
In 1983, she again lent her voice to another cult character: Boushh, the mysterious bounty hunter that Leia uses to infiltrate Jabba’s palace in Return of the Jedi.
Pat Welsh died on January 26, 1995, at the age of 79, from pneumonia.
A little-known woman… but one who left her mark on two of the greatest science fiction films of all time.
