La star du film, Ovidiu Balan, avait 11 ans lorsque le film a été tourné. C’est un Tsigane roumain qui a été pris sous l’aile du réalisateur avec l’aide du gouvernement français. Gatlif a créé le film comme une œuvre sur les thèmes de la gitane «agitée et libre», contrairement à la notion de peuplement proposée pour les populations sinti et rom. dans l’UE.
