Depuis la signature des Sex Pistols en 1973, le label Virgin Records continue de surprendre et de rebondir. Si en 2013 le nom Virgin rappelle avant tout en France la fermeture de plusieurs boutiques de la franchise, il ne faut pas confondre les megastores du groupe et le label qui lui est à la fête pour célébrer quarante ans d’aventures supersoniques menées par l’entrepreneur fou Richard Branson.
Que de chemin parcouru depuis le lancement de Virgin Records en 1973, baptisé ainsi par l’équipe de Richard Branson car ses associés et lui étaient alors vierges de toute expérience dans la création d’entreprise. Branson et son compère Powell étaient alors disquaires à Londres spécialisés dans l’import d’albums de krautrock où ils offraient de la nourriture végétarienne aux clients. Il n’y avait pas de quoi bâtir l’empire Virgin Group qu’on leur connaît aujourd’hui, qui s’étend des forfaits téléphoniques aux Megastore et pourtant tout est parti d’un pari musical risqué.
La firme londonienne a donné sa chance dès leurs débuts aux Sex Pistols et ce n’est sûrement pas un hasard. Ils ne savaient pas jouer de leurs instruments mais ont vite compris les règles du jeu pour faire déjà à l’époque, ce qu’on appellerait aujourd’hui du buzz, bien encadré, par cette maison de disques qui s’est fait une spécialité de recueillir les recalés des maisons de disques traditionnelles. C’est ainsi que Virgin a été une maison pour des groupes post-punk indispensables comme PiL, Magazine, XTC et peut certainement se vanter d’être le seul label capable de créer un lien entre les Spice Girls, Devo et même Daft Punk, repéré par une filiale de Virgin en France, appelée Source qui inclut son titre “Musique” en 1996 à la compilation Sourcelab vol 2.
Mais la toute première sortie du label qu’on célèbre cette année a été “Tubular Bells” de Mike Oldfield, un album ovni dont aucun autre label ne voulait entendre parler et qui est depuis entré dans l’histoire.
Quarante ans après, le Royaume-Uni célèbre ce succès national avec une exposition qui insiste sur les “40 years of disruptions” (40 ans de perturbations) du label. Richard Branson, toujours un brin mégalo, en profite pour partager les secrets de son succès dans son autobiographie “Like A Virgin”. Bien entendu les documentaires et compilations vont pleuvoir toute l’année.
Mais n’oublions pas de rappeler que ce label divisé en filiales n’a pas résisté à la crise du disque : fusionné en 2006 avec Capital Records, puis racheté, puis revendu jusqu’à faire partie aujourd’hui d’Universal Music, le bateau ivre Virgin Records a marqué l’histoire de la musique mais s’est fait avaler lui aussi par les majors dont les chaises musicales ont cessé d’intéresser le public.
Pourtant, ces 40 ans ne sont peut-être pas le dernier anniversaire qu’on pourra fêter de Virgin.
